Medal of Valor awarded during Monday meeting

A Tiffin Police Department officer received the Medal of Valor accommodation Monday night during the Tiffin City Council Meeting.

Officer Justin Nowak earned the honor following an incident Sunday night when he helped rescue a Tiffin resident involved in a house fire and could night get out of the residence due to being in a wheel chair. Nowak carried the woman to safety and suffered minor burns from falling debris.

On another matter, Mayor Aaron Montz discussed in his report that the bids for the city’s street paving projects have come in and are under the City Engineer’s estimates.

Councilman Jim Roberts said during the Law and Community Planning Committee meeting, it was decided to bring the issue of the use of golf carts within the city to City Council.

Council approved an ordinance to amend the 2019 budget to allow an appropriation of funds for a donation to the Tiffin Parks and Recreation Department and the Tiffin Bark Park for the construction of a new shelter at the park. The donation is in the amount of $12,334.

In addition, council approved an ordinance to hire a part-time engineer technician and amend the 2019 budget and pay schedule.

In other news, council also approved the following resolutions and ordinances:

• Ordinance to amend the 2019 budget to appropriate funds for the cardiac equipment purchased by the Tiffin Fire Rescue Division.

• Ordinance to authorize the Mayor to sign a Park Management services agreement with the East Green Foundation to manage the East Green.

A Finance Committee meeting is set for 4 p.m. Monday in the Administrative Conference room at City Hall, located at 51 E. Market St.
