Check out the TSPL DigitalLib to view historic videos of Tiffin

Many people are familiar with the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library’s Seneca County Digital Library (SCDL). The yearbooks, photographs, and postcards in the SCDL are viewed by people interested in the history of Tiffin and Seneca County. Some people just like to browse these items to reminisce. There is another digital library for which some people may not be familiar. It the TSPL DigitalLib.

This library contains videos of Tiffin and Seneca County history and is available on Youtube (URL bit.ly/SCDLYoutube). Currently, it consists of 22 videos that range in subjects from historic events to more current events. Many of the videos are donations from current and former Seneca County residents.

Several of the historic videos show events from Tiffin in the 1940s to the 1970s. One video titled Swimming Pool Dedication and the Seneca County Courthouse is from 1953. This features images of Paul Hoerneman giving a speech at the pool opening ceremony with many other local dignitaries that were present. The Seneca County Courthouse segment shows an event taking place on the lawn of the former courthouse with local bands, dignitaries, and guests taking part. The donor was John Abbot, though the video was actually taken by Herman Sayger who owned the former Sayger Enterprises Camera Studio located at 70 S. Washington St. Another video donated by Mr. Abbot, Decoration Day Parade in Tiffin, Ohio 1955, shows portions of the parade that took place in downtown Tiffin. It is interesting to see the older cars in the parade, as well as the groups that participated. At one point in the video, a particular shot shows the business sign for Sayger’s.

In addition to the videos donated by Mr. Abbot, there are several videos that show more current events in Tiffin. These were donated by longtime Tiffin resident Rodney Young. The Seneca County Justice Center Dedication from May 17, 2018 captures the entire ceremony while showing all of the dignitaries and visitors to the event. Another video shows an evening at the Civil War Museum. It is titled American Civil War Museum of Ohio, March 29, 2014. One of the highlights were re-enactors portrayed President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. Seeing the program with people dressed in period clothing and speaking of the important events of the 1860s brings history to life for the viewer.

Several more videos that are quite popular on the TSPL DigitalLib are the Columbian High School Marching Band and Concert Choirs. Mr. Young transferred these from videocassette to digital video so that they could be posted to the library. People who participated in the band or choir commented that they enjoyed the great memories that these videos evoked.

These are only some of the videos available on the TSPL Digital Library. Anyone interested in the history of Tiffin and Seneca County can find something to watch. Browse through the site for historical research or just to reminisce.
