Man injured in explosion

BLOOMVILLE — A man was injured in an explosion at 6341 E. CR 6 Saturday morning.

Chief Nate Blaser of Bloom Township Fire Department said a man was out in his shop cutting the top of an oil barrel off and it hadn’t been cleaned all the way. The barrel exploded and contents of the barrel caught on fire and started to spill, which created a small amount of burning in the shop, he said.

The man sustained burns and penetrating injuries from debris and was transported by Bloomville EMS to Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital, Blaser said. He said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Blaser said the man’s son was in the shop at the time of the explosion and was not injured.

He said the fire was small and it took crews less than five minutes to put out the fire. Crews remained at the scene about 30 minutes just making sure the fire was put out, Blaser said.

He did not have a total loss estimate, but said there was “minimal damage.” Blaser said fire damage was limited to the contents of one small area of the shop and the shop itself had “very minimal damage.”

Blaser said Attica-Venice-Reed Fire District, Scipio-Republic Fire Department and Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, but were cancelled enroute.

The fire was reported at 11:10 a.m.
