Jobless numbers decline

Seneca County’s jobless rate decreased in August from July and is higher than estimates from last year.

According to information from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in July and 4.8 percent in August. The rate in August 2016 was 4.6 percent.

According to statistics, there were about 25,800 people employed in August, up 100 from July.

The civilian labor force, the estimate of all people working or looking for work, was 27,100 in August, down 100 from the previous month.

Unemployment estimates in surrounding counties saw decreases across the board.

Crawford County had the highest unemployment in August, with 5.6 percent, down from 6.3 percent in July. Wyandot County had the lowest unemployment in the area at 3.7 percent in August, down by 0.2 percent from the previous month.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Ohio was 5.4 percent in August, up from 5.2 percent in July and from 4.9 percent in August 2016.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in August, up from 4.3 percent the previous month and down from 4.9 percent in August of last year.
