FELC to host children’s science day Oct. 5; register by Tuesday

Franciscan Earth Literacy Center is to host Science Days for Kids ages 5-10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the center, 194 St. Francis Ave.

Participants can become scientists for the day and explore science through experiments, labs and activities. The theme of this session is ecology. Participants can learn how animals survive in winter, about a food web, how plants help animals survive. They also can learn how people make soil from trash and how people change the environment.

Participants should provide their own lunch.

The day is led by Sister Shirley Shafranek, who was a science teacher for 28 years, and Matt Miller, a biology teacher for 18 years.

Advanced registration is required by Tuesday with $18 per child. Scholarships are available.

Fall Fest planned for Oct. 19

at YMCA, Hedges-Boyer Park

Families are invited to celebrate fall 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 19 during Fall Fest at Tiffin YMCA and the AMVETS shelter at Hedges-Boyer Park across the road from Tiffin Community YMCA.

Trunk or Treat in the YMCA parking lot is to start at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to decorate their vehicle and provide treats to pass out to children. Later, there are to be games, crafts, s’mores, hay rides and other activities until 8 p.m.

The event is free, but canned goods are to be accepted at the AMVETS shelter.

The event is hosted by Tiffin Parks & Recreation, Tiffin Community YMCA, Franciscan Earth Literacy Center, Seneca County Park District and OSS Solid Waste District.

Free deer processing

workshop Oct. 16 in New London

FINDLAY — Outdoor enthusiasts interested in learning to field dress and butcher a white-tailed deer are encouraged to attend a free informational workshop 6-9 p.m. Oct. 18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The free workshop is to take place at the Fitchville Conservation League Club House, 2623 Jennings Road, New London.

Trained professionals from the Division of Wildlife and Fitchville Conservation League are to cover topics including field dressing, skinning and butchering. This workshop is hands-on and portions are to take place outdoors. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately.

Beaver and otter trapping

lottery planned Oct. 13

COLUMBUS — Trappers are invited to take part in drawings at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 to trap beaver and river otters on public land, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

A list of locations can be found at wildohio.gov under Controlled Hunting and Trapping Events.

Interested trappers are required to attend a drawing at one of the five wildlife district offices.

There is no fee to apply, but applicants must be present when drawn to be eligible. A valid 2018 hunting license and fur taker permit are required.
