High school student vocal, band and musical theatre workshops at Heidelberg

There’s still time for high school students to sign up for two opportunities offered by Heidelberg University to experience music making at the collegiate level.

On Jan. 20, the School of Music & Theatre will host its annual Honor Festival for choral and symphonic band students. Participants will work with Heidelberg faculty members for mock auditions, masterclasses and ensemble rehearsals and performances. Voice students will work with Greg Ramsdell, director of Choral Activities, and the Concert Choir, while instrumental students will work with Jon Waters, director of bands, and the Symphonic Band.

The Honor Festival starts at 8:30 a.m. in Brenneman Music Hall and concludes with a concert at 6:30 p.m. in Ohl Concert Hall, open to the community.

Cost is $25 and includes lunch, dinner and a T-shirt. Interested students can register at www.heidelberg.edu/honor-festival-registration.

The School of Music & Theatre then invites high school students to its annual Vocal Audition Workshop.

Students will participate in mock auditions, clinics, one-on-one coaching and masterclasses on topics such as “Finding Beauty: Embrace More Freedom in Your Vocal Technique,” “Finding Truth: Delve into Character through Text Study,” “Finding Creativity: Improvisation as a Tool for Discovery” and “Finding a Future: Build a Life Pursuing Your Passion.”

There are two dates and locations for the Vocal Audition Workshop:

• Jan. 24, on the Heidelberg campus (Brenneman Music Hall)

• Jan. 25, at the Performing Arts Center in Eastlake, Ohio

The workshop begins at 9 a.m. on both days.

In addition, the School of Music & Theatre has enlisted a trio of guest artists to work with students. Professional actresses and musical theatre performers Caitlyn Oenbrink and Joan Anderson and jazz singer and entrepreneur Julia Goretsky will assist Heidelberg voice and theatre faculty in conducting the workshops.

The workshop is “Embracing Eve: Exploring Feminism in American Musical Theatre,” a musical theatre performance featuring the guest artists, Heidelberg students and faculty members.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 24, in Gundlach Theatre on the Heidelberg campus and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25, at the Performing Arts Center in Eastlake.

Cost for the Vocal Audition Workshop (both locations) is $10 and includes a T-shirt.

Interested students can register at heidelberg.edu/take-the-stage-vocal-audition-workshop.

For additional information about either of these opportunities, call Pat Pate in the School of Music & Theatre at (419) 448-2073.
