Prewitt’s brilliance leads Heidelberg men to road rout

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Myron Prewitt has had some big games in his collegiate career.

The Heidelberg senior reached 1,000 points for his career earlier this season, and has been one the Student Princes top players for years.

But he may have topped himself Wednesday at John Carroll.

Prewitt had 30 points and 26 rebounds as Heidelberg thumped the Blue Streaks 92-65 in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest.

Prewitt had nine offensive boards, a pair of blocks and made three 3-pointers in 29 minutes. He finished 13 of 22 from the floor.

With the win, Heidelberg improved to 5-9, 3-4.

Prewitt was the star, but three other Student Princes scored in double figures, as HU built a 48-24 halftime lead and never looked back.

James Hanley had three 3s and finished with 15 points, while Curt Jacobs made four treys on his way to 14 points. Dylan Woods added 11 points and three assists, and Phariz Watkins scored two points, but added six rebounds and a team-best five assists.

Heidelberg shot 37 of 76 from the floor and went 14 of 35 from 3-point range. It also held a healthy 58-34 rebounding advantage.

John Carroll (6-8, 2-5), made just 23 of 70 field goal attempts, and was just 7 of 30 from deep. Jackson Sartain made five 3s, and finished with a team-best 15 points for John Carroll. Jimmy Berger had 11 points, and topped his squad with seven boards.

Heffington too much for ‘Berg

After a back-and-fourth game, John Carroll’s women’s basketball team was able to surge ahead against Heidelberg in the final quarter.

The teams were tied at 21 after the first quarter, and the Blue Streaks held a 38-37 lead at the break.

After three quarters, the game was tied at 49.

But John Carroll, behind a tenacious offensive performance from Nicole Heffington, broke away late. Heffington’s 3 with 6:52 left broke a 53-all tie, and sent the Blue Streaks on a 14-5 run. The stretch was punctuated by a Heffington jumper with 1:21 left. It gave JCU a 67-58 edge.

Heidelberg tried one last rally, but ran out of time and lost, 70-68.

Heffington finished shooting 14 of 19 from the floor, and made 6 of 7 free throws. She finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds and four assists as John Carroll improved to 10-4, 6-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Olivia Nagy added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Streaks, and Kahrin Spear put up nine points.

Heidelberg (7-7, 3-4) countered with another brilliant game from Willard graduate Maddy Crawford. The forward finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds to go with four blocks.

Alyssa Riley added 12 points, and Brittanie Ulmer had 15 for the Princes.
