Old Fort golf
Coach: Matt Combs, 12th year.
2017: Fifth in Sandusky Bay Conference River Division.
Returning letterwinners: Seniors Brandon Swartz, Jarett Woodall. Juniors Carson Steyer, Kaleb Wilkinson.
Others: Junior Jack DeRan. Sophomore Dre Toy. Freshmen Andrew Combs, Colin Nutter, Dylan Baker, Casey Clouse, Alec King.
Outlook: With just four veterans back this year, youth and inexperience will figure into the season for Old Fort. However, coach Combs doesn’t see that as a hindrance.
“I think the youth is going to help us improve this year. I’m looking forward to that,” Combs said.
“I think we’re going to be a little deeper than last year,” he said.
Combs sees his son, Andrew, and Nutter as two youngsters who should contribute early on
“I’m pretty sure both of them are going to be varsity members for me,” he said. “I think they’re going to help us out.”
The challenge this year will be to find at least four consistent scorers. Last year, Combs said, the Stockaders struggled because they usually had three solid scorers, while the fourth lagged behind. Shoring that up will help the team in what should be a very competitive SBC River Division, he added.
“Maybe we don’t have that really strong (individual) scorer. We’re going to have to play really consistently and pack them in there in the low 40s,” he said.
“I think we’re going to be better than we were last year, but I think the league is going to be really competitive this year,” he said.
