Mohawk boys golf
Coach: Paul Dunn
2017: 4-4, 5th in N10
Returning letterwinners: Senior Logan Drum.
Others: Senior Kaiden Hammer. Sophomores Evan Kuenzli; Zach King. Freshmen Reese Hannam; Owen England.
Outlook: It’s a new-look team for Mohawk this season.
The Warriors have just one lettermen back and have a new coach. Basketball and baseball coach, Dunn, said he was excited to take the position to try something new.
“I’ve always been a coach in different things, so I just wanted to try something different and so far, I’ve liked what I’ve seen from this group,” Dunn said. We’ve had three invites so far and we’ve taken about 20-25 strokes off our score, so they are improving already.”
Thankfully, Dunn doesn’t have a completely new team as Drum returns as the Warriors’ top golfer.
Drum was a second-team All-N10 selection a year ago with a 44.50 scoring average per nine holes.
“Drum is a great player and a great kid,” Dunn said. “Logan is like another coach out there and I pair him with the freshmen to show them things and he’s just a great teammate.
“I think he played every bit of 18 holes over the summer a day and it shows. He’s very consistent with his driver and irons and he has continued to work on his short game. He’s very meticulous and he know what he needs to do. He’s really fun to watch.”
Dunn likes his team and where its headed. He said in the first couple of invites he saw some nerves. So teaching the kids to slow down and value each shot and to focus on the next shot will be key this season.
“I’ve had a chance already to see Upper and the (Brett) Montgomery kid and (Jake) Forehand from Seneca East and I think those two teams might be at the top of the N10 this year,” Dunn said. “I like being around some of these kids I don’t usually see a lot from the other sports.”
