Bellevue grad Santoro scores 12 in BG victory over Xavier

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green women’s basketball team jumped out to a big lead after trailing early in the first quarter, and came out with a 63-53 win over Xavier.

The Musketeers held a 4-0 lead for the first two minutes of the game before a 3-pointer by the Falcons closed the gap.

BG quickly took a 6-4 lead before Xavier took a one-point lead off a long range shot. The Falcons took the lead one last time on a triple and held the lead the remainder of the game.

With a 9-7 lead, Bellevue graduate Carly Santoro got herself onto the stat sheet with a pair rebounds. With less than three minutes in the first, Santoro scored her first two points to give BG a 14-7 lead.

At the 46-second mark, the Bellevue native gave her team a 10-point lead on a fastbreak 3 before laying the ball in at the last second on the fastbreak. The Falcons held a 21-9 lead at the end of the first.

Leading 21-12, Santoro laid in another basket with under eight minutes left in the half. About six minutes later she sank a jumper to extend the Falcons’ lead to 36-21.

Bowling Green took a 38-24 lead into the half.

Santoro opened the third quarter with a steal, a pair of missed 3s and a foul. The Falcons outscored the Musketeers 18-13 in the third to take a 56-37 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was the only time that Xavier had any advantage, but the 16-6 quarter edge wasn’t enough to cut the deficit.

At the 5:39 mark in the fourth, Santoro split a pair of free throws. She sank the first to give the Falcons a 59-40 edge and missed the next.

Santoro finished the game third on the team in scoring, with 12 points to go with five rebounds. Caterrion Thompson led the Falcons with 19 points while Andrea Cecil added 14.
