Dragons sweep by Wheeling Jesuit
Fraley’s pitching, offensive eruption carry Tiffin
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Scoring a total of 13 runs on Monday, Tiffin swept a double-header against Wheeling Jesuit. It won Game 1, and the second game 10-8.
Luke Fraley started game one on the mound for the Dragons. Fraley pitched a good game, only allowing three hits in the first four innings without giving up a run.
Tiffin was unable to plate any runs the first four innings. In the fifth, the Dragons plated all three of their runs. With two runners on, Isaac Perry singled to left field to push across two runs. Perry then stole second. After a Cardinal error, Perry home his way home to give TU a 3-0 advantage.
Fraley was was looking to pitch a complete game as he was still pitching well in the seventh inning. With two outs and two runners on, a TU error allowed for a Cardinal to cross home. Fraley was taken out, which allowed Kevin Borst to take the mound. Borst made quick work on the final batter of the seventh.
Fraley pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing two unearned runs, six hits, and had six strikeouts. The Dragons’ Nick Whetnall finished 3 for 3 with a run scored, Luke Brust logged a pair of hits and scored a run, and Perry added a pair of runs batted in.
Game 2 relied heavily on the Dragon bats.
Kurt Barbeau scored early for TU as he came home on a wild pitch in the top of the first.
The Dragons’ Brady Ward was given the ball on the mound and he had a shaky start. In the bottom of the first, Ward allowed three runs on three hits and a Tiffin error. Tiffin trailed for the first time all day with a 3-1 deficit.
The Dragons got the bats going in the second. TU was able to score four runs off one hit and an error. Three straight bases on balls loaded the bases for Fernando Nieto. Nieto hit a triple to to left with one out to give his team a 5-3 lead.
Trailing again in the seventh, 8-6, TU made good at the plate by scoring four runs on four hits. Brayden Callihan and Alec McCurry led the charge. With a pair of Dragons aboard, Callihan doubled to left , scoring both runners. McCurry kept the line moving with a pinch hit double to score Callihan, and give Tiffin a 10-8 lead.
Borst came out in the seventh to close the game. He ended the day by striking out the side and earning the save.
Barbeau racked up two hits and two RBI’s, Callihan finished with two runs scored and a pair batted in, and Nieto collected two hits and three batted in.
