Fliers send four to SBC finals

PORT CLINTON – Four Clyde tennis entries advanced to the finals and another is in the match for third after the first day at the Sandusky Bay Conference Tournament.

The tournament resumes Saturday, with Fliers in the finals of the No. 2 and No. 3 singles as well as both doubles matches. The Fliers have the top-ranked entry in each.

Melissa Laconis will face Serena Bruno of Perkins in the No. 2 finals. Laconis advanced by beating Oak Harbor’s Christine Bolen and Fremont St. Joe’s Allie Barrett by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Maddie St. Marie also breezed her way into the No. 3 singles finals against St. Joe’s Lauren Klaege. She beat Edison’s Emily Vogus 6-0, 6-1 and Oak Harbor’s Addison Hasselbach 6-0, 6-2.

Fliers Addie Martin and Alayna Barrera opened the No. 1 doubles bracket by beating Edison’s Gabby Killbride and Lilia Hite 6-3, 6-0, then dropped Port Clinton’s Hannah Roberts and Lauren Steyer 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the finals against Maria Schoder and Karina Haycook from Perkins.

The No. 2 doubles final will pit Clyde’s Alicia Klohn and Bree Dowling against Port Clinton’s Emma Eickert and Bailey Cole. The Fliers advanced by beating Edison’s Madisyn Frederick and Jessie Graves 6-1, 6-0 and Ashley Kaufman and Dehvin Shumate of Perkins 6-2, 6-2.

Iga Makal will play for third in the No. 1 singles bracket for Clyde against Calvert’s Laura Haley.

Makal beat St. Joe’s Morgan Collins 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Port Clinton’s Alyssa Krupp 6-2, 6-1. Haley opened with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7) win against Huron’s Elizabeth Mills before losing to top-ranked Olivia Rohrbacher of Perkins 6-0, 6-0.

Calvert’s Bradlee Warnement will play Bolen for seventh at No. 2 singles. Warnement beat Vermilion’s Haleigh Shreves 6-1, 6-2, but then fell 6-2, 6-0 to Bruno and 8-2 to Port Clinton’s Meghan Gallogly.

Marie Brodman of Calvert will play Vogus for seventh at No. 3 singles. Brodman fell 6-0, 6-2 to Marissa Esposito of Perkins and 8-5 to Port Clinton’s Paige Styer.

Calvert’s Maria Goshe and Devyn Warnement will play Sandusky St. Mary’s Miranda Braden and Mary Kromer for ninth at No. 1 doubles. Goshe and Warnement fell 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in their other match to Vermilion’s Destiny Grim and Skyler Myers.

Singles domination fuels Willard

WILLARD – Willard breezed through the singles matches and took a pair of three-set doubles contests Thursday in beating Northern Ohio League foe Bellevue 5-0.

Jessica Beamer blanked Chloe Brubaker 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Crimson Flashes, Emma Moll beat Jena Weider 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, and Carlee Gibson dropped Mady Brugnone 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Addie Sloan and Jo Brubaker defeated Redmen (4-11, 2-6 NOL) Elizabeth Harper and Wyanna Schalk 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Aspen Schmidt and Claire Buss outlasted Emily Becks and Mackenna Peacock 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2 doubles for Willard.

Ross blanks TC

Fremont Ross stormed past Columbian 5-0 Thursday.

Gillian Gallagher beat Columbian’s Eden Stephey 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Little Giants, Olivia Henry dropped Brenna Saum 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Alyssa Meyer defeated Brooke Smith 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

Lily Abdoo and Kaity Kelly of Ross beat Tornadoes Rylee Rucklos and Katie Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Mallory Hutton and Sophia Biggens beat Columbian’s Gabbi Roszman and Olivia Kramer 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
