Dancing queens: HU sweeps regional
CORTLAND, New York -There’s a word for what Heidelberg’s softball team is right now.
The Student Princes laid waste to the rest of the teams at the Division III regionals, going 3-0, punctuating the experience with an 5-1 victory over DeSales in the finals.
With the victory, Heidelberg will advance to next week’s super regionals. The Student Princes will host and begin play against Alfred Friday.
“I’m so proud of the way we handled our business this weekend,” said HU coach Betsy Hada. “It was a long trip for us, but we battled every inning, every at-bat, every pitch.”
Heidelberg was making its first regional appearance in program history. Now, it’s on to more unchartered territory.
The game itself was less about drama and more about Heidelberg taking care of business.
Desales scratched out a run in the top of the first inning on a DJ McCauley RBI single. But HU’s Makaela Mitsch continued her brilliant postseason with an RBI base hit in the bottom half of the inning, and in the fourth, Kyleah Brey smacked a two-run homer to right. Heidelberg went on to add two more unearned runs, the big hit being a single by Renee Lovett that scored a pair and put HU up by four.
And just like that, the game essentially was over.
That’s how it’s been when Paige Atterholtr is on the mound.
Atterholt, who threw a shutout Saturday, was brilliant again, allowing the Bulldogs just five hits while striking out three and walking a pair. She improved to 18-3, and has won her last four decisions.
The Student Princes improved to 33-8. The Bulldogs’ season ends at 19-15.
