TC gets one champ, may get 2nd when NOL tourney resumes
WILLARD – The Northern Ohio League Tennis Tournament didn’t finish Saturday, but Columbian already has a champion.
And it may get another.
Second singles player Braden Kuhn won an an NOL title by getting a first-round bye, then defeating Norwalk’s Travis Morgan 6-2, 6-4, and upending Shelby’s Eric Gove, 6-0, 6-3.
“Braden had a great tournament and was dominant in the final,” Columbian coach Chip Weingart said.
In second doubles, Adam Young and Zach Gaietto held off Willard’s Cam Smith and Tyler Vanichek 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, then knocked off Shelby’s Joey Rittenhouse and Bryce Briggs, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. They will play for an NOL title next week against Bellevue’s Jake Chagolla and Matt Poock.
In first singles, TC’s Nick Gaietto lost 6-0, 6-0 in his first-round match to Willard’s Brandon Bohach. In third singles, the Tornadoes’ Ben Klepper fell 2-6, 7-2, 7-5 to Norwalk’s Joey Thomas.
In first doubles, Columbian’s Eline Widman and Hunter Stark won their first-round match, topping Willard’s Connor Robinson and Kyle Burma, 6-4, 6-2. The duo then fell to Bellevue’s Drew Ring and Josh Becks, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.
Widman and Stark will play in another match against undetermined opponent when the tournament resumes next week.
Burtis grabs lone win for Calvert against?Fostoria
FOSTORIA – Jack Burtis grabbed a win for Calvert in the first singles match against Fostoria, but that was all Calvert could muster, falling 4-1 Friday to the Redmen.
Burtis scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dylan Stone.
Fostoria meanwhile picked up singles wins from Sabian Arana, 6-1, 6-4 over Ryan Gase, and Jordan Marshall 6-3, 6-4 over Phillip Boes.
In doubles action, Tyree Ticey and Noah Kitchen cooked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against Danny George and Nick Martorana. At second doubles, Calvert’s Miranda Shorts and Amanda Traxler took Jeremiah Blah and Bishop Mahan to three sets but fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
