Kirian-led Jackets blank St. Joe
FREMONT – Taylor Kirian led at the plate and she and her teammates didn’t let Fremont St. Joe succeed there Wednesday as New Riegel claimed a 5-0 Midland Athletic League victory.
Kirian went 3 for 3 with a homer, and fanned three and scattered three hits, a walk and a hit batter to improve to 14-4.
Lauren Zoeller and Hailey Theis both added a double, single and run for the Blue Jackets (15-4, 3-1 MAL).
Brianna Reardon (4-4) took the loss for the Crimson Streaks (4-4, 2-3).
Sarah Franks, Laura Baez and Natalie Zyski each singled.
Rams turn back Bucks with rally
UPPER SANDUSKY – Upper Sandusky turned back a late rally Wednesday to clip North Central Conference foe Buckeye Central, 4-3.
“We started out strong with four runs in the first, then the bats went silent,” Upper Sandusky coach David Young said. “Our defense and pitching had to take over from that point and we came through with the win.”
It didn’t come easily.
Buckeye Central got its first run in the top of the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth, but the Rams (10-5, 6-2 NCC) held on to get Kyla Cusac the win.
Jaya Smalley singled twice, scored and drove in a run for the Rams, Kalene Johnson doubled and drove in a run, Maranda Stansbery singled and scored and Maddison Stansbery had a single, run and RBI. Sara Gier and winning pitcher Kyla Cusac (4-3) also each scored.
Nicole Tschanen’s run and two RBIs off a double and singled paced the Bucks (8-8, 5-4).
Maddie Boes and Sierra Hanes both singled and scored, Sydney Long singled twice, Skylar Johnson singled and knocked in a run and Miranda Wurm and losing pitcher Morgan Wurm (8-8) both singled.
TC clips Willard
WILLARD – Columbian took two of the singles matches and split the doubles Wednesday to edge Northern Ohio League foe Willard, 3-2.a
Braden Kuhn gave TC a 6-1, 6-2 No. 2 singles win over Noah Lenz, and Ben Klepper dropped Chandler Robinson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Tornadoes (9-5, 5-2 NOL) Adam Young and Zach Gaietto captured the No. 2 doubles contest against Cam Smith and Tyler Vanichek.
The Crimson Flashes got a 6-3, 7-6 (14-12) No. 1 singles by Brandon Bohach against Nick Gaietto, while Kyle Buurma and Connor Robinson held off Eline Widman and Hunter Stark 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles.
Rams suffer first NCC loss
UPPER SANDUSKY- Upper Sandusky suffered its first in the North Central Conference by falling 3-2 Wednesday to Ontario.
The Rams’ two wins came in singles play.
Evan Scheck defeated Drew Jackson 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Seth Frey closed out Andrew Schultheis 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.
Ontario’s Brandon Wagner beat Seth Sprang 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The Warriors made the sweep in doubles play.
Rams (7-3, 4-1 NCC) Danial Maltsbarger and Aaron Pire lost to Ty Carcione and Mike Bischak, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Christian Zapan and Logan Wilson beat Upper Sandusky’s Drew Barth and Noah Frey 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.
