Heidelberg bounced to bottom bracket

MARIETTA – If Heidelberg wants to win an Ohio Athletic Conference title, its going to have do it the hard way. The Student Princes were bounced down to the losers bracket after dropping its opener 13-7 to John Carroll.

Heidelberg couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start, spotting the Blue Streaks five runs in the top of the first. Things snowballed from there as John Carroll built up an 11-0 lead after taking its at-bats in the sixth inning.

Heidelberg finally got going in the bottom of the frame with an Arneal Squibb RBI single. The Student Princes made it a game scoring five more in the seventh, highlighted by Eric Monroe’s 3-run home run.

Monroe homered again in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.

Squibb had three hits and three RBIs on the day.

Aaron Lapaglia tossed 6 2/3 innings to get the win for John Carroll.

Heidelberg plays Baldwin Wallace today at 2 p.m. to try to keep its tournament hopes alive. A win and Heidelberg would play a second game today at 5 p.m. against the loser of John Carroll and host and top seeded Marietta.
