Blue Jackets’ offense erupts in Old Fort

OLD FORT – No. 9 batter Alex Theis doubled in two runs to fuel a key fourth inning Monday as New Riegel rolled past Old Fort 14-3 in Midland Athletic League play.

The Blue Jackets trailed 3-2 after the first inning, but Austin Mathias (3-2) settled in on the hill from there, allowing just three more baserunners – only one reached second – and fanning six.

Still, it took a while for New Riegel (13-10, 5-4 MAL) to break free.

Aaron Reinhart opened the fourth with a single, Michael Kirian walked and Aaron Acree reached on an error to bring in Reinhart.

Kirian scored on Blaine Hughes’ sac bunt, Brandon Arbogast walked and Theis doubled in Acree and Arbogast for a 6-3 lead.

The Blue Jackets followed that up with eight runs in the fifth.

Kirian ended with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs, Theis added a single, a run and another RBI and Mathias singled twice and scored twice. John Zoeller scored twice and singled, Reinhart added another run and two RBIs and Acree scored another run.

The Stockaders (5-19, 1-9) got a double and run from Brad Heilman, a double from Jacob Hammond and an RBI-single and run from Brandon Tittle.

Jake Wilson (3-6) took the loss.

VAN BUREN – Calvert rallied for all of its runs in the top of the seventh and reliever Jacob Vera pitched a shutout in the bottom of the frame Monday as the Senecas upended Van Buren 6-4.

The Black Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, added another run in the third and tacked on two more in the fourth.

Austin Prenzlin (4-0) struck out six, but gave up the four earned runs en route to the win.
