Mitsch bombs for ’Berg softball team

CLERMONT, Fla. – Heidelberg sophomore Mikaela Mitsch brought her big stick to Florida and used it to wallop a pair of home runs Wednesday in a pair of victories for the Student Princes.

Mitsch drove in seven between the two games which saw Heidelberg beat Manhattanville, 5-4, and later Lake Forest to the tune of 3-2.

Freshman hurler Erin?Chapman picked up victories in both contests to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Manhattanville Valiants led 4-0 after two innings before the ‘Berg came charging back. Mitsch launched a 3-run bomb in the third, scoring Jami Wagner and Taylor Hicks to make it 4-3.

Rachel Garris hit her first collegiate home run in the fifth, scoring Lisa Simmons and giving Heidelberg a lead it wouldn’t relinquish to Manhattanville.

Lake Forest got an early 2-0 lead in the first before Mitsch brough the rain in the bottom half of the inning. Her 3-run homer came just before a 3-hour rain delay.

After the delay, ‘Berg (6-1) scored two in the second and one in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fifth, it was Mitsch again as she drove in Wagner, who had tripled.

Yanek perfect for Dragons

ORLANDO -Madison Yanek fired a perfect game Wednesday as Tiffin University blanked Nyack, 8-0.

In the second game of the day, Tiffin also picked up a victory with a 5-2 win against Bridgeport.

Yanek needed only five innings to pick up the no-hit victory, aiding her cause with a 2-run double at the plate. Cassandra Brown ended the opener with a walk-off double.

Taylor Spang picked up the victory in the nightcap, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out four.

Jena King tripled and drove in two, Kaitlyn Gruenewald tripled and had an RBI while Payton Denman doubled and singled.

Roussel nets four in Dragons’ loss

ORLANDO – Tiffin University’s lacrosse team continued to have a rough trip to Orlando, falling Wednesday to Stonehill College, 17-10.

The loss continued the gauntlet of a schedule TU opened the season with, playing three teams ranked in the top 10 in its first four games, including the No. 7 ranked Stonehill.

The Dragons (0-4) were down 5-0 in the first 10 minutes before Alexis Macmillan put Tiffin on the board. She finished with three goals on the day as well as an assist.

TU got as close as 7-4 when Gina Abulone scored with 9:55 to go in the half before Stonehill scored the next three goals.

Abulone had two assists on the day as well. Emily Roussel found the back of the net four times and assisted on another goal. Katelyn Hill had two goals in the loss.

Jessica Bombard had 13 saves in net for TU.

‘Berg women’s tennis nets first win

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Heidelberg’s women’s tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Wednesday.

The Student Princes drilled Greenville, 9-0, before falling to Lake Forest College, 7-2.

Nicole Millar dropped the lone set to Greenville, a 3-6 setback in her first set before closing out the match with 6-2 and 10-2 victories.

In doubles play, Sara Potts and Rachael Brushaber stayed perfect on the season with an 8-0 win.

Potts, a junior from Clyde, picked up one of Heidelberg’s points in the second match of the day against Lake Forest with a 10-6 win at No. 5 singles. She reunited with Brushaber for the other point with a 8-1 victory in doubles play.

Dragons edged by Charleston

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Tiffin University’s men’s tennis team fell to University of Charleston, 5-4, Wednesday.

Robbie Ball and Agustin Mangone as well as the duo of Ben Fievet and Jordon Simon-Chopard picked up doubles wins for the Dragons.

Simon-Chopard and Ball picked up singles wins but Tiffin couldn’t pick up another win the rest of the way.

Student Princes net split on courts

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Heidelberg’s men’s tennis team had a split Wednesday afternoon.

The Student Princes beat Greenville College, 6-3, in the first match of the day before finishing with a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Lake Forest College.

Zach Schwenning and Dorian Zempf led the singles unit with victories in the opener.

Ben Moore and Tyler Flickinger not only won their doubles match in the opener but also picked up singles wins. Matt McDivitt had a singles win for the ‘Berg.

In the second match of the day, Schwenning picked up a singles victory, 10-7, while Flickinger teamed with?Dan Driscoll to pick up an 8-0 doubles victory against LFC.

Tiffin University blanks Chowan

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Tiffin University blanked Chowan Wednesday, 9-0.

Malaika Messi, Valentina Mazzola and Chelsea Beck all had three set victories in singles play. Teammates Caroline Nelhage, Rachelmary Brozovich and Abigail Schuster had an easier time with two-set wins for the Dragons.

Messi and Mazzola as well as the duos of Nelhage/Beck and Brozovich/Schuster each had victories in doubles action.
