Dragons open GLIAC play with sweep

AVON – Before Friday’s doubleheader at All Pro Freight Stadium, it had been a difficult season for Tiffin University.

The Dragons came into the double dip with Saginaw Valley State sporting a 1-16 record and in the throes of a 16-game losing streak.

But after Friday, Tiffin has a two-game winning streak and is tied for first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Crazy game, huh?

Tiffin broke its losing streak – and started a winning streak – by defeating the Cardinals, 2-0 and 5-1.

TU improved to 3-16, 2-0 in GLIAC play.

In the first game, the Dragons got a complete-game shutout from Joe Perretta, who scattered six hits over seven innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

Tiffin got its runs in the third inning, when Kirk Olesick lined a two-run single.

In the second game, Tiffin got a strong start from Kevin Kline, who threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out five and allowing an unearned run.

Offensively, Cody Spires paced Tiffin with two hits, two RBIs, and a run. Kyle Lento drove in a pair of runs with a triple.

The Cardinals’ (3-9, 0-2) Austin Nogiec drove in his team’s only run.
