Prep Roundup: Howard shines for TC in league meet
SANDUSKY – Natalie Howard won the 100 backstroke and claimed second in the 100 butterfly with a school-record effort Thursday to highlight Columbian’s night at the Northern Ohio League championships.
Howard touched in first in the 100 back in 1:05.15, and her finished second in the 100 fly in 1:02.22 for her school record.
That helped the Tornadoes end fourth in the team standings with 45 points, one behind Ontario and Norwalk, who tied for second.
Sandusky scored 115 points to run away with the team crown, with Shelby (43) taking fifth and Willard (13) ending sixth.
Howard also helped the 200 medley relay (2:06.32) finish second. Lindsay Young, Bre Cooper and Kamryn Sharlow rounded out the relay.
Columbian wound up third in the boys meet with 57 points.
Ontario beat Sandusky 116-75 for the team title. Shelby took fourth (30), followed by Norwalk (22) and Willard (7).
Chris Gates figured in four of Columbian’s five runner-up finishes.
He ended second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.12) and 100 back (58.46), and helped TC take second in the 200 medley relay (1:47.57) and 200 free relay (1:36.07).
Braden Kuhn, Nate Ramsdell and Isaac Lewis joined him in the 200 medley relay. Justin Schwartz, Lewis and Kuhn filled out the 200 free relay.
Kuhn added a second in the 100 free (52.08).
Baker games help TC pull away
ROSSFORD – Columbian’s boys inched away in the Baker games Thursday to upend Northern Ohio Bowling Conference foe Rossford 2,969-2,908 at Rossford Lanes.
The victory was the eighth in a row for the Tornadoes, who now lead the NOBC with a 7-2 mark.
Columbian led just 1,957-1,947 after the two rounds of individual games, thanks to John Funk’s 256 and Kris Wilson’s 229 in the first round and Will Jones’ 206 in the second.
Columbian opened the five-game Baker set with a 255-195 victory and slowly pulled away from there. The first game in that set started with eight strikes in a row for TC.
Funk finished with a match-best 443 series, Wilson turned in a 413 and Jones had a 378. Gerad VanHooiser (365) and Shawn Fitch (358) also contributed for TC.
The Bulldogs got a 426 series from Karl Hermes and a 416 from Steven Hernandez.
Meanwhile, Rossford’s girls beat TC 2,306-1,845.
Bry Reidlinger paced TC with a 342 series and a personal-best 195 game, both match-bests.
Brooke Mira added a 316 series, and Tawny Sarver (218), Kaitlin Evans (207) and Candice Kaminski (206) also contributed for TC.
Kathleen Hermes (335), Jessica Kulczak (328) and Taylor Moore (316) each had a 300-plus series for Rossford.
