Local Roundup: NR defense pitches scoreless first, crushes Streaks
FREMONT – New Riegel’s defense shut out St. Joe in the first quarter, and it had more than enough offense to put the game away early.
The Blue Jackets (13-1, 6-1 Midland Athletic League) surged to a 28-0 lead at the first stop, led 46-8 at the half, and blew out the Streaks, 69-14.
Kara Scherger had a big all-around game for New Riegel, scoring 17 points, dishing six assists and adding six steals. Taylor Arbogast had 11 points and five steals, while Lauren Ladd had 10 points.
New Riegel’s Taylor Kirian had a game-high eight boards to go with seven points.
St. Joe, which shot just 4 of 28 from the floor, was led by Be Reardon, who had eight points. Makenzie Reiter paced the Streaks up front with six boards.
Dragon swimmers close out home season
The Tiffin University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped their home season with nine first place efforts Friday afternoon.
The men (3-3-1) defeated Edinboro 71-66, but fell to Malone 74-64.
TU’s Alex Weaver won both the 1-meter (184.95) and 3-meter (181.40) boards. Kyle Doss won two swimming events for TU, taking first in the 100-yard backstroke (52.53) and the 100 butterfly (51.67).
The Dragons picked up victories from Ty Collins in the 500 freestyle (5:03.65), Lucas Merigue in the 50 free (22.15), Pedro Van Isschot in the 200 free (1:45.64), and the 200 free relay team of Doss, Collins, Merigue and Van Isschot (1:28.06).
The women fell to Edinboro 99-29, and 80-37 to Malone. Brooke Hill led the Dragons’ efforts with 105.30 points to win the 1-meter board.
Tiffin finishes the regular season Jan. 25, against Wilmington at 1 p.m.
