Local College Roundup: Heidelberg’s Goobic races to OAC?title

WESTERVILLE – Heidelberg’s Sophie Goobic took first in 22:42.4 in the women’s 6K at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships at Otterbein.

Heidelberg finished fourth out of 10 teams. Dani Blum ran 16th (24:03.9) for the Student Princes, Shawnda Henault finished 22nd (24:31.2), Allie Dresser placed 27th (24:40.6) and Hayley Cochran claimed 47th (25:12.3).

In the men’s 8K, Heidelberg finished sixth on the strength of Brad Palocko’s 12th (26:05.8).

Hopewell-Loudon graduate Avery Gatchell added a 37th (26:57) for Heidelberg, Zach Flint ran 38th (26:57.1), David Kindall came in 48th (27:13.7) and De Churchya took 80th (28.00.2).

Tiffin falls to Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State defeated the Dragons 4-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (7-8-1, 5-7-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) had goals from Jennifer Goethals in the 29th minute, Ashley Henderson in the 36th minute, Marci Norhtuis in the 53rd minute and Olivia Perrin in the 74th minute.

Olivia Haskin and Hannah McMasters each had one shot on goal for the Dragons (4-12-1, 3-8-1) in the loss and Lauren Bowyer had two shots on goal.

Tiffin goalkeepers Shelbie May and Kellie Gruber each recorded four saves.

‘Berg, Raiders end in tie

ALLIANCE – Heidelberg and Mount Union battled to a 1-1 tie Saturday in women’s soccer.

Heidelberg opened things up with a goal in the eighth minute of the game, and Mount Union rallied for a goal in the 85th minute to tie things up.

Bethany Mattern scored the goal for The ‘Berg, while Keenan added two shots on goal.

Mount Union’s Kolbie Haines had two shots on goal, connecting with one for the Raiders.

Heidelberg goalkeeper Molly Schriber recorded seven saves, while Mount Union’s Maria Favorite had two.

Mount Union one-ups ‘Berg men

ALLIANCE – Chris Motley’s goal in the 30th minute was Mount Union, and the game’s only score as Heidelberg lost 1-0 to the Raiders 1-0 Saturday.

Heidelberg’s Kyle Boone and Andy Lacefield each recorded a shot on goal, while goalkeeper Matthew Stevens had five saves.

Mount Union’s goalkeeper Dylan Lias recorded two saves.

Warriors slay Dragons

DETROIT, Mich. – Wayne State defeated Tiffin University 30-28, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14 Saturday.

Krisen Bulkiewicz recorded 18 kills and nine digs for the winning Warriors, Kelsey Bonewits had six kills and four digs and Madison Reeves tallied five kills and four digs.

Danielle McQuade’s 12 kills and 11 digs sparked the Dragons. Olivia Cobb had eight kills and four digs, Sabine Stadler (2 digs) belted eight kills and Casey Volz added 11 digs.

Raiders bust up ‘Berg

Mount Union defeated Heidelberg 25-19, 19-25, 25-15, 25-23 Saturday, getting 11 kills, 13 digs and three aces from Nicole Snyder.

Taylor Webb backed her with 14 kills and four digs, Kara Berger (2 aces) recorded seven kills, and Lauren Mastroine added three kills and 26 digs.

Heidelberg’s Amber Welfle recorded 12 kills and12 digs, Sarah Botts lined 10 kills, Jamie Kluding recorded six kills and 12 digs, and Jubilee Haase added eight digs.

With the win, Mount Union shares the OAC title with Heidelberg
