Senecas double up OF

MANSFIELD – Fred Fabrizio and Jack Burtis each scored and provided an assist Tuesday as Calvert opened Division III sectional play by doubling up Old Fort 4-2.

“It was a very competitive game. Old Fort came out and did a really nice job,” Calvert coach Mike Fabrizio said.

“Our kids fought and were able to come up with the victory. I felt out senior leadership brought us through it,” he said.

The teams entered halftime knotted at 1, but Ryan Gase scored off a Burtis pass and Burtis converted a Fred Fabrizio offering for a 3-1 Calvert (2-10-2) lead.

The Stockaders (0-15) cut the deficit to 3-2 on Nolan Weaver’s goal, but Mike Bennett tacked on a goal for Calvert after that.

The Senecas never trailed, with Fred Fabrizio snapping a scoreless tie in the first half with an unassisted goal. Old Fort tied the game when Tittle converted a Weaver pass.

Anthony Traxler stopped five of the seven shots he faced for Calvert, which plays Saturday at 1 p.m. against Mansfield Christian.

Austin Cornelison tallied 13 stops against 17 shots for the Stockaders.
