Chieftains’ Gorrell gets state berth after going to playoff

BOWLING GREEN – Hopewell-Loudon junior Bryce Gorrell gained one of the final two state berths Thursday in a three-player playoff hole at the Division III district tournament at Stone Ridge.

Gorrell, Bluffton’s Rick Streicher and Parkway’s Brian Schatzer each finished regulation play with a 78, with just two of the four individual state-qualifying spots remaining.

Gorrell made it after shooting a bogey on the playoff hole, with Streicher also advancing.

The Chieftain is the only area player who will compete at the state meet, set for Oct. 11 and 12 at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Golf Course.

The top four teams and top four players not on those teams qualified for the state tournament.

Ottawa Hills upended Ashland Crestview 312-325 for them title, with Van Buren edging Lima Central Catholic 330-331 for third.

St. Wendelin finished 11th with a 356 to lead all area squads, with Peter Campbell firing an 83 and Gabe Walter shooting an 86.

Gorrell’s 78 helped the Chieftains finish 14th with a 365. Jarid Gelinas backed him with a 90.

Mohawk’s Brayden Dunlap competed as an individual, shooting an 81.

Ada’s Slade Downing (74) and Woodmore’s Alex Gedert (77) captured the other two individual state berths.
