Wolfpack chews up yards, Mohawks
FOSTORIA – Donovan Dunlap ran for 182 yards and three touchdowns in Downriver’s deliberate, ground-churning offense Saturday in a 36-20 win over St. Wendelin.
The senior had TD runs of 25 and 65 yards to help the Wolfpack (2-1) grab a 14-6 lead in the first quarter, with the second score coming on his team’s first snap after St. Wendelin had knotted the game at 6.
The Mohawks re-tied the game on Donovan Scudder’s 6-yard run and Brad Buhrow’s conversion run with 1:16 left in the first half, then took a 20-14 lead a little more than two minutes into the third quarter on Brady Rutter’s 9-yard jaunt.
But Downriver pulled away from there.
Dunlap’s 2-yard plunge capped a 66-yard, 10-play drive, and Kyle Johnson’s conversion run had the Wolfpack up to stay at 22-20.
Fourth-quarter scores came on John Mulligan’s 8-yard run and conversion, and Isaac Grubke’s 24-yard pass to Caleb Patrick.
Patrick finished with 84 yards on 20 carries for Downriver, which rolled up 334 rushing yards on 54 carries.
Cole Williams ran 11 times for 47 yards for the Mohawks (2-1), scoring St. Wendelin’s first touchdown on a 6-yard run in the first quarter.
