Prep Roundup: Red Devils down Senecas in softball

Arlington came out strong with four first inning runs, and pitcher Rachel Helms made it hold up as the Red Devils topped Calvert, 8-1.

Erica O’Rear had a pair of RBIs for Arlington. Dani Heaster and Brittney Johnson also drove in runs.

Calvert picked up just three hits on the afternoon as Kate Brickner, Nicole Bickley and Gabby Bennett all had hits. Bennett drove in Bickley for the team’s only run.

Pair of NOL honors for TC tennis

Columbian ended with a pair of tennis league honors Saturday at the Northern Ohio League Tournament.

Brandon Berry and Hunter Stark landed on the second team at No. 1 doubles after falling 6-0, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4 in the finals to Shelby’s Evan Head and Sam Coleman.

The TC duo opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Willard’s Chandler Gibson and Connor Robinson, then dropped Bellevue’s Cody Henderson and Tony Harper 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the title match.

Braden Kuhn added an honorable mention award at No. 2 singles.

He started by beating Willard’s Logan Blanchard 6-3, 6-3, then lost 6-1, 6-3 to Sandusky’s Jacob Riedy. Kuhn rebounded by dropping Bellevue’s Brent Runion 8-2 to capture third.

Carey’s Newell has lone win at L-B meet

FINDLAY – Carey’s Dana Newell claimed the area’s only win Saturday at the Liberty-Benton Invitational.

Newell cleared 5-2 to take the high jump, leading the Blue Devils to eighth in the team standings with 28 points.

The host Eagles beat Van Buren 138-100 for the title in the 15-team field. Old Fort ended 15th (9 1/2).

Old Fort’s boys finished seventh in their meet with 35 points, with Carey taking 10th (23). Liberty-Benton defeated Columbus Grove 152-127 for the championship.

Marcus Meyers claimed third in the 1,600 (4:50.2) to lead Old Fort and all local boys.
