Gaietto moves on to district
SANDUSKY – Columbian’s Nick Gaietto earned a spot in the Division I sectional tennis semifinals and a berth in the district tournament Thursday.
After a first-round bye, Gaietto beat Mansfield Madison’s Bobby Reid 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and Norwalk’s Kyle Lang 6-3, 6-0.
He faces Ashland’s Andy Ellerbrock in Saturday’s semifinals.
The top four advance to the district. Gaietto will be the only Tornado making the trip, though two TC entries came within a win of joining him.
Braden Kuhn had a first-round bye and beat Sandusky’s David Linden 6-4, 6-3, but then lost 6-4, 6-2 to Ashland’s Tim Sprunger.
Mason McCool and John Obringer opened the doubles portion of the sectional by dropping Madison’s Nick Barcroft and Dan Hale 6-1, 7-5, but the TC duo lost 6-0, 6-2 to Norwalk’s D.J. Steffani and Collin Bickerstaff.
Eline Widman also had a first-round bye for TC, but then lost 6-0, 6-0 to Ashland’s Tim Sinchook.
Brandon Berry and Hunter Stark also opened with a first-round bye in doubles, then lost 6-0, 6-0 to Norwalk’s Trevor Bowers and Harry Love.
Calvert’s season ends at sectional
PORT CLINTON – All four of Calvert’s entries were eliminated on the first day at the Division II tennis sectional.
Jack Burtis came the closest to advancing to the district tournament for the Senecas.
He blanked Fremont St. Joe’s Ben Selvey 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round before falling 6-2, 6-0 to Oak Harbor’s Eli Boldt.
Phillip Boes fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to St. Joe’s Jacob McQuistion in the first round.
Calvert’s doubles team of Mark Fowler and Danny George suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Bellevue’s Tony Harper and Cory Henderson.
Daniel Kwiat and Ian Warnement lost 6-1, 6-1 to Bellevue’s Blake Kryling and Drew Ring.
