Senecas turn back St. Joe in tennis

FREMONT – Calvert claimed the only three contested matches Monday in contest with Fremont St. Joe.

Jack Burtis blanked St. Joe’s Jacob McQuistion 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Senecas Daniel Kwiat and Ian Warnement bounced back from a 6-0 loss in the first set with wins of 7-5, 6-3 over Hunter Harrison and Aaron Burns at No. 1 doubles.

Mark Fowler and Danny George beat Crimson Streaks Nick McNair and Ben Selay 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Tornadoes even up mark

Columbian’s lone loss came in a three-set battle Monday as the Tornadoes upended Northern Ohio League foe Willard 4-1.

Corey Bohach downed Nick Gaietto 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for Willard’s only win.

Braden Kuhn gave TC (3-3, 1-1 NOL) a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Logan Blachard, and Austin Crabtree added a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles over Noah Lenz.

Tornadoes Mason McCool and John Obringer defeated Brandon Bohach and Kyle Buurma 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

Brandon Berry and Hunter Stark dispatched Chandler Gibson and Connor Robinson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

‘Berg splits with No. 6 Marietta

Eric Monroe hit a solo homer and drove in another run to help Heidelberg beat No. 6 Marietta 6-2 in the opener, but Marietta took an 11-7 slugfest in the nightcap of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Heidelberg snapped a scoreless tie with two runs in the second inning of the first game and matched Marietta’s run in the top of the fourth with one in the bottom of the frame before Monroe launched his shot.

Andrew Zenczak and Jordan Martin both added two singles for the Student Princes to help Ethan Holt (3-1) get the win. Ben Sniezak picked up his third save.

Evan Brockmeier doubled for the Pioneers.

Marietta (18-7, 8-2 OAC) never trailed in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and extending that to 6-2 in the third.

Josh Ungerbuehler hit a two-run homer in the third for the Pioneers and added another run and RBI.

Aaron Hopper went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs, Alex Toth went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, Brockmeier scored twice and doubled, Jordan Grilliot tripled and Christian Demko chased in two runs with two singles.

Mike Mulvey (4-2) went all nine innings – the first game of OAC doubleheaders last seven innings – for the win, fanning seven.

Steve Morse hit a solo homer for the Student Princes (15-12, 4-6). Eric Monroe ended 3 for 5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs, and Joe Staab and Martin each singled twice. Alex Grove drove in two runs and singled.

Tyler Fruhwirth (2-4) suffered the loss.
