HU drops DH to Otterbein
Heidelberg had the tying run on third with two out in the first game of its doubleheader with Otterbein, but Wes Meadows was able to retire Alex Grove to secure a 4-3 Cardinal win.
Otterbein carried that momentum into the second game at Peaceful Valley, winning 4-2.
The Cardinals improved to 16-4, 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg slipped to 13-8, 2-2.
In the first game, Meadows held the Student Princes to a single run and five hits over six innings. The HU bats came alive in their final at-bat. Arneal Squibb’s two-run triple in the seventh was the team’s biggest hit. Eric Monroe had two hits and an RBI for Heidelberg.
Meadows struck out seven. Only one of the runs he allowed was earned in improving to 4-0.
The Student Princes’ Adam Manner (2-1) took the loss. Manner allowed four runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out four in 5 1/3 innings.
In the second game, Heidelberg led 1-0 after one and 2-1 going to the seventh. But the Cardinals scored two in the seventh to take the lead, and added another run in the ninth. Meadows started at third and had two hits and scored twice.
Otterbein’s Taylor Ellis gave a strong start, going eight innings and allowing two runs, one earned. He walked one and struck out six to improve to 3-0. Steve Huber, a freshman, went five innings, allowing a run on three hits, walking five and striking out six. He got a no-decision.
Kyle Fluharty (1-1) took the loss.
