Rams lead sectional field after first day

CAREY – Ten Upper Sandusky wrestlers advanced to the semifinals Friday, helping the Rams end the first day of the Division III sectional tournament with a 55-33 1/2 lead over Van Buren.

Carson Mengerink leads the group of Rams, recording two pins on his way to the 113-pound semifinals. He flattened Cory-Rawson’s Devin Meyer (3:06) and Hopewell-Loudon’s Braxton Young (1:03) and takes on Arcadia’s Jarrod Bowman today.

Derek Hansen pinned Riverdale’s Caleb Hicks (1:31) in the 126-pound quarterfinals, while Steven Richmond stuck St. Wendelin’s Sheldon Doogs (3:04) to reach the132-pound semis. Hansen starts today against Cory-Rawson’s Zach Smith, and Richmond tangles with Fremont St. Joseph’s Sean Vasquez.

Alex Kenner opened the 152-pound class with a bye for the Rams, then pinned Van Buren’s Max Frost (1:48). Kenner opens today against Fostoria’s Keegan Green.

Derek Thomas had the closest match of the day of the Rams bound for the semifinals, edging Riverdale 170-pounder Even Gladden 8-6 in overtime. His reward is a match with Fostoria’s Tony Reynolds.

Upper Sandusky’s Tylor Pritchard and Dylan Robertson both advanced with pins in less than two minutes.

Pritchard stuck Dillon Emahiser of Bucyrus (1:41) to reach the 182-pound semis, where he will go up against Riverdale’s Tre Headington. Robertson flattened McComb 195-pounder Matt Cataline (1:49) and now takes on Carey’s Zack Sauber.

Ian Baker opened the 220-pound division with a bye, then pinned Carey’s Marcus O’Flaherty (1:45) to earn a semifinal berth against Van Buren’s Ora Oler.

Thurston Dyer (106) and Cory Frey (160) each advanced with a bye for the Rams. Dyer faces Van Buren’s Austin Corey, Frey takes on Hopewell-Loudon’s Zac Hrabak.

Taran Gillen (145) is also still alive in the consolation rounds.

Riverdale holds a 32 1/2-25 margin over Carey for third, with Hopewell-Loudon leading Fostoria 20-18 1/2 for fifth. Mohawk is eighth (16), and St. Wendelin and Calvert are tied with McComb for 13th with no points.

Several other area wrestlers are also in today’s semifinals.

Hopewell-Loudon 106-pounder Chet Swartzmiller takes on Arcadia’s Tristian Love, while H-L 120-pounder Damion Vitt tangles with Fostoria’s Luke Leonard.

The 126-pound semifinals include Fostoria’s Lance Smith facing H-L’s Alex Brock, the 132-pound semis feature Carey’s Brayden Leist against Mohawk’s Kevin Lonsway, and the 138-pound semifinals have Carey’s Tyler Higgins taking on Mohawk’s Tyler Baird.

All four 145-pound semifinalists are from the area. Fostoria’s Salvador Cantero faces H-L’s Tristan Myers, and Carey’s Zack Brodman goes up against Mohawk’s Alex Hoerig.

Carey 160-pounder Austin Tschanen tangles with Van Buren’s Chance Sonnenberg, and Carey’s Bryce Mullholand and Mohawk’s Grant Price go at it at 170 pounds.

The 182-pound semis will have Carey’s Lincoln Stansberry taking on Van Buren’s Payton Whitticar, and Coltan Hossler of Hopewell-Loudon and Jacob Moran of Carey will battle for a berth in the 285-pound finals.

The tournament resumes today at 10 a.m.
