SIXTEEN WINS AND WHAT DO YOU GET?
You can almost hear the soothing voice of Tennessee Ernie Ford singing, can’t you? His message though was about coal miners working long hours with little hope of improving their station in life. “Another day older and deeper in debt” was the second line. I’ve changed the word tons to wins as I take a look at the Cleveland Indians current winning streak. It reached 16 last night and has many fans and pundits proclaiming a return trip to the World Series.
Now as much as I would like to see that happen (preferably with a different outcome) I’m not ready to put in my order for a World Series Champion T-shirt just yet. Seriously, what does sixteen wins get the Tribe. Realistically – a shot at the playoffs. Make the postseason and anything can happen. Nothing though is guaranteed.
Look at the Los Angeles Dodgers. Two weeks ago they were a shoo in to not only get to the Series, but to win it – if you believe the experts. Now they have lost several games and seem mortal indeed. Don’t bet on the Indians yet. My suggestion is you just enjoy the ride.
Some might suggest that the 16 game winning streak is not that big a deal as they swept the lowly Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox in the process. Both of these clubs have gutted their teams with trades. Still the Indians had to beat them and did. The streak also includes a sweep of the New York Yankees in the Bronx and the Kansas City Royals at Progressive Field. Throw in wins against the Boston Red Sox (where they hammered Red Sox ace Chris Sale) and the Baltimore Orioles and it becomes more impressive.
The Indians are doing this with key members of the team on the disabled list. Michael Brantley, Jason Kipnis and Andrew Miller are still on the list and Lonnie Chisenhall just came off it. The Tribe has gotten major contributions from Giovanny Urshela, Erik Gonzalez, Tyler Olson, Bradley Zimmer and Greg Allen. Who?????????? The next man up mentality is making this season very memorable.
The view from my seat suggests that the streak will inevitably come to an end, maybe as soon as this afternoon. Sixteen wins and what do you get? A very enjoyable ride. Enjoy it!
