George C. Barnes

George C. Barnes passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at The Health Center at Freedom Village, Bradenton, Florida, after a six-year battle with Alzheimer's disease just three days after his 89th birthday.

George was born Aug. 8, 1925, in Tiffin, to Walter and Evelyn (Scott) Barnes. He was a 1943 graduate of Melmore School, Tiffin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. After the war ended, he re-enlisted and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines for two years, traveling all over Europe.

George married Margaret "Peggy" (Smith) Dec. 18, 1957, and they spent 50 wonderful years together. They moved to Bradenton in 1969. George worked for 15 years at Anheuser Busch Co., retiring in 1988. After retirement, he worked as a security guard at Fairway Bay, Longboat Key, Florida, for another 20 years until Peggy's death in September 2008.

George was predeceased by his parents; his wife; and his two brothers, Harold and John.

He is survived by his only son, Scott (Michelle) Barnes; two granddaughters, Brittany and Christa; and a great-granddaughter, Camille VanderMolen, all of Bradenton.

George was interested in the stock market and profiting from gold and silver coins. He loved swimming, watching dog racing at the Sarasota Kennel Club and spending time with his family. He was a fan of the Honda Accord, trading in his car for the newest model every year for 18 years!

His memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin, with George's brother-in-law, Deacon John Walter, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's honor to Alzheimer's Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter - 14010 Roosevelt Blvd., No. 709, Clearwater, FL 33762.
