Robert W. Chapman, 95, of Bettsville, died at 9:38 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Elmwood Nursing Home, Green Springs.
Robert was born July 25, 1919, in Seneca County, to John and Eulalia (Puffenberger) Chapman. He married his wife of 73 years, Arlene Henry, July 3, 1938, in Falmouth, Kentucky, and she preceded him in death March 18, 2012.
Survivors include his son, Robert (Linda) Chapman of Fremont; son-in-law, Steve Robinett of Burgoon; five grandchildren, Rex Robinett, Mitchell Robinett, Jolene Meyers, Bryan (Dawn) Chapman and Ryan Chapman; and three great-grandchildren, Marcus, Zachary and Ava.
Robert retired from Basic Refractories, Bettsville, and also owned Chapman Trucking. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Bettsville, Basic Quarter Century Club, Green Springs Masonic Lodge and a charter member of Bettsville American Legion Post No. 733.
Robert was a former Bettsville Village Council member and also served on the Bettsville Recreation Board. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan, along with an OSU fan. He was a 1937 graduate of Bettsville High School and a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 8th Armored Division in Europe during World War II.
Robert also was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Diana Robinett.
His funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, 301 Union St., Bettsville, with Pastor Pat Danner and Pastor Gary Adams co-officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Union Cemetery, Old Fort, with military rites being rendered by the United Veterans Council.
Visitation for family and friends will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
