George L. Smith, 81, of Bellevue, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1932, in Clyde, to George H. and Catherine A. (DeVanney) Smith. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to medical school at Brooke General Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. Following his time in Texas, he spent time in California before being briefly stationed in Guam and Okinawa. When the Korean War started, he served as a medic. He married Jean M. Hagerty Aug. 2, 1952.
He is survived by his wife; five sons and two daughters, Stephen Smith of Cincinnati, Stanley (Pam) Smith, Brent Smith and Kelly (Bill) Baptista, all of Bellevue, Daniel Smith of Sandusky, Patrick Smith of Clyde and Colleen (Larry) Renwand of Norwalk; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren with three on the way; two brothers, John (Rita) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Thomas (Pierette) of Davenport, Florida; and a sister, Sally Scranton of Chippewa Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, David.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue, where the rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m.
His funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center St., Bellevue. Burial, with military honors, will be at a later date.
