Seneca County's favorite-son gubernatorial candidate is to be omitted from the primary ballot in Ohio. Barring a successful appeal to U.S. Supreme Court, Fostoria native and Mohawk graduate Charlie Earl won't be on Tuesday's ballot as a Libertarian.
As The Associated Press story stated, "The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ruled that Libertarians' slim chances of a successful First Amendment challenge to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's decision should bar the party from proceeding."
You've heard about chances being between slim and none, and slim left town? According to the federal appeals court, slim doesn't matter, anyway.
Thus, Earl's name likely won't be on the ballot in November, either. But we should have at least one local favorite in the general election.
Bill Young of Green Springs has filed to be a write-in Democratic candidate for the 88th District Ohio House seat. And Bill Reineke of Tiffin has filed to be a write-in Republican candidate for the same seat.
Young should be a lock to secure his party's nomination, but Reineke faces two write-in challengers from Fremont - Richard Geyer and Rhonda Damschroder, who has filed as a placeholder candidate for her husband, Rex, after his election petitions were invalidated by the Sandusky County Board of Elections.
There are more reasons to vote for Reineke than his place of residence. He twice has served as board chairman for the Chamber of Commerce. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Citizen Award from the chamber and received an outstanding business award from Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. in 2001.
He was co-founder of Tiffin Tomorrow and is a member of Heidelberg University's board of trustees
He was chairman of Ohio Automobile Dealers Association in 2010-2011 and is Ohio director for the National Automobile Dealers Association.
These are just some factors that cause us to urge voters to write in Reineke on the Republican ballot.
Besides, Reineke would allow voters in November to cast a ballot for a candidate born in Fostoria.
