FREMONT - Fremont Community Theatre is to present "The Drowsy Chaperone: A Musical Within a Comedy" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Co-directors Mitchell Antesky and Mindie Ottney have assembled a cast from Fremont, Clyde, Bellevue, Gibsonburg, Woodville, Bowling Green, Oak Harbor, Rossford and Toledo.
The Man in Chair, portrayed by Antesky, opens the show feeling "a little blue." Addressing the audience, he invites them to listen to one of his favorite Broadway records, "The Drowsy Chaperone," a fictional 1928 musical comedy about the wedding of a starlet who is about to leave her life on the stage to marry a man she believes to be the love of her life.
As the Man in Chair listens to the record and describes the story line, it comes to life in his apartment. He shares amusing tidbits about the actors with the audience throughout, and he and the audience are gradually transported into the setting of the show.
This spoof of a 1920s musical comedy includes many gags, colorful costumes, energetic song and dance, set changes and story lines.
Other featured cast members are Lora Horn (Janet) and Dave Riegel (George) of Bellevue; Ben Archer (Robert), Sami Trapp (Kitty) and Dwayne Arnold (Gangster No. 1) of Clyde; Ellen Tucker (Mrs. Tottendale) of Perrysburg; Ryan Mahaffey (Underling) of Rossford; Matt Book (Mr. Feldzieg) of Woodville; Kristopher Krotzer (Gangster No. 2) of Gibsonburg; Scott "Harley" Berry (Aldolpho) of Toledo; Candi Cantrell (Trix, the Aviatrix) and Darla Brown (The Chaperone) of Fremont.
Rounding out the ensemble are Ashleigh Mays of Bowling Green, Jessica Holland of Fremont, Ryan Book of Woodville and Pete Lowry of Oak Harbor.
Performances continue for two more weekends, May 9-11 and 16-18, at Fremont Community Theatre, 1551 Dickinson St., Fremont. Tickets are $10 for seniors and students and $12 for all others.
