St. Wendelin Boys Track

March 28, 2014
dsp The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Fred Hay, eighth season.

2013: 10th in MAL.

Returning letterwinners: Juniors Zach Recker (sprints); Rob Park (MD/throws). Sophomores Justin Walter (sprints); Michael Noel (hurdles/sprints).

Others: Senior Gabe Walters. Freshmen Carson Noel (MD); Jacob Sellers (distance); Nick Kelbley (sprints); Greg Ricker (distance); Isaiah Cassidy (field events/MD); Nick DeHaven (distance).

Outlook: St. Wendelin graduated the only athlete who scored points at the MAL and district meets last year (Jorden Nye) and bring back just four letterwinners on a team of 11, leaving the Mohawks plenty of challenges.

"Again, numbers on the boys team will prevent us from being team competitive," Hay said. "However, we are fortunate to have good quality athletes and I feel they will do well individually."

Park will add running to his repertoire this year, and Recker is back for the sprints after being injured for part of last season.

Walter and Michael Noel are also back to bolster the sprinting corps, with Noel also leading the way in the hurdles.

A first-year senior and six freshmen round out the team, and Hay said the newcomers should do well.

"One first-year senior, Gabe Walters, has displayed his athletic ability in other sports and we are looking forward to seeing where his talents lie in track," he said.

"This is a talented [freshman] group and will allow us to enter at least some relays, yet to be determined," he said. "We are looking forward to building this team form the ground up, determining where our strengths lie, and having a stronger competitive team this season."
