The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Theresa Webb, 20th season (240-209).

2013: 8-17, 2-9 MAL.

Returning letterwinners: Seniors Edy Mowrey (3B/1B); Maddie Statham (C/OF). Juniors Sammie Digby (CF); Meghan Reiter (P/3B). Sophomores Mikayla Gilliland (SS); Krystal Krout (LF); Allie Rutter (1B/P).

Others: Juniors Becky Berton (OF); Mitcima Sukaphiboon (OF). Sophomores Anna Mischkulnig (OF); Hunter Weidner (1B/OF). Freshmen Courtney Babb (C/OF); Jessica Holman (IF/OF); Raegan Preble (IF/OF); Cailin Reineck (2B).

Outlook: Struggles in the field led to few wins last year, but Webb said that should turn around this spring.

"Defense has been kind of a sore spot for us. We made a lot errors in the past, and it seemed like maybe one error would open the door to five errors," she said. "I'm looking at our defense and who we're going to (put) where, and I don't see that happening this year.

"What killed both [of our pitchers] wasn't them, it was errors behind them. When you start pitching extra batters, it tires a pitcher out and then it does break them down. I think those two parts are going to be much improved from the past several years," Webb said. "A defense can help a pitcher or hurt a pitcher, and the last couple years, it hasn't helped our pitchers."

Reiter (6-10, 4.47 ERA) and Rutter (2-6, 4.86 ERA) both return to the circle for the Mohawks.

While they each posted losing records, they did have success at the plate.

Reiter landing on the second team in the league and district after leading the MAL with 14 doubles while batting .412, driving in 28 runs and scoring 17 times.

Rutter hit .300 with 14 runs and 16 RBIs.

Mowrey (.321, 15 runs, 10 RBIs) and Gilliland (304, 29 runs) each earned honorable mention MAL awards last year.

Webb hopes the experience of seven veterans will help the Mohawks find a way to complete the wins this year that she said eluded them last season, especially in the MAL.

"We'll beat the teams we're supposed to beat," she said, "but we need to beat the people we're not supposed to beat, and that comes from finishing the game and having the confidence ... .

"Last year, we only won two [MAL] games, which was disappointing, to only win two games in the league. Most certainly, I expect us to be in the top part of the league," she said. "Outside chance at pushing them? Yeah, sure. It depends on how quickly we can get everybody working."
