Outlook: The way Cleveland describes it, Mohawk's track team this season resembles a kind of puzzle.
The pieces are there, it's just a matter of where they fit.
"It's gonna be kind of fitting pieces together, seeing how they work together and go from there," Cleveland said.
A big part of that, Cleveland said, will be how his young athletes develop.
"We're not real deep; we have 16-17 guys, that doesn't give us a lot of leeway," Cleveland said. "We have a lot of seniors, a lot of upperclassmen, which is really gonna help. We're gonna depend on a lot of these freshmen to step in and do stuff for us. They'll be competing in one of two events; some of these kids may be competing in quite a few more than that. It's gonna be baptism, for them, by fire. They're gonna jump right in and get their hands wet."
Still, Cleveland said he has a nice group of talent returning.
"We have a few really good distance kids back, and I'm really looking for Mitch and Logan to do some big things for us as far as the 800 and mile are concerned," he said. "They're gonna be huge leaders on our distance squad. Coming back for the sprints, Brandon Emshoff was part of our relay squad that advanced to the regional [in the 4x200] and set our school record, so we're expecting big things. Austin Eaton has done things in the past. He got hurt and was pretty much out for the whole season last year, so we're hoping he can step in and really help us out."
With a smaller roster, Cleveland said it may be difficult to have someone in every event.
"We're gonna struggle to fill some of the things, just because we don't have a lot of experience in them," he said. "We'll definitely give the kids the opportunity if they want to fill them to try to fill them, but I'm just not anticipating filling all the spaces."
