Coach: Jenny Weinandy
2013: 23-5, 10-1 MAL
Returning letterwinners: Seniors Clara Adelsperger (2B); Julie Adelsperger (P/1B); Kasey Adelsperger (P/1B); Taylor McClain (C); Brooke Weinandy (OF); Charlotte Moes (OF). Juniors Allison Price (utility); MacKenzie Sowers (OF); Aubrey Ward (OF); Chelsea Clinger (IF). Sophomores Cambria Kohlenberg (OF); Hannah Kieffer (3B); Ally Weinandy (SS); Allison Osborn (OF).
Outlook: The season hasn't started, but Weinandy's already feeling good about this year.
It's not just because her team is coming off a 23-5 season.
It's not just because she has all but one of her players from that team back.
It's because, for the first time since their freshman seasons, the three Adelspergers are healthy.
"I'm thankful no one got injured in basketball last year," she said. "So I'm looking forward to having that pitching duo (Julie and Kasey) for the first time since their freshman year. They're used to helping each other out and hopefully it will show on the mound."
Julie Adelsperger was the league's best pitcher a season ago going 20-5, striking out 193 batters and registering an ERA of 1.59.
Weinandy also returns six of the MAL's top hitters from 2013. Kohlenberg was the most prolific, with an average a little better than .500. Sowers hit .439, while Kieffer batted .420, McClain .417 and Clara Adelsperger .408.
Now, think about a big addition to that lineup.
"I think we really missed Kasey's bat last year, but hopefully she can pick up where she left off," Weinandy said.
It's the last season for the MAL, and Weinandy said she expects it to be competitive, as usual.
"I think the MAL is a tough softball league, and that's one thing I will miss: the teams that were competitive that made us better," she said. "When you play better teams it puts you in a place where you know someone's better than you and you have to work even harder for it."
