March 28, 2014
dsp The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Jill Welty, sixth season

2013: Sixth in MAL

Returning letterwinners: Seniors Marcus Ardner (mid-distance/distance); Ben Bodart (hurdles/mid-distance); Zach Clouse (LJ/relays); Cody Malone (sprints); Dylan Napier (distance). Juniors Patric Gase (HJ/hurdles/relays); Chet Swartzmiller (PV/distance); Alex Wood (distance/throws). Sophomores Dylan Alvarado (mid-distance); Noah Breidenbach (md); Dillon Williams (mid-distance); Elancio Valezquez (sprint).

Others: Senior Eli Tooker. Juniors Trenton Burns; Collin Shaver. Sophomores Garrett Hedrick; Trevor Hickle; Hunter Sadler. Freshmen Justin Coleman; Charlie Dell (pv); David Irving; Ben Kleinfelter; Drew Kurtz; Nikos Portentoso; Austin Rainey.

Outlook: Hopewell-Loudon brings back four athletes who qualified for regionals last season, and also returns plenty of experience.

The Chieftains have five senior letterwinners on the roster, and Welty said that will be a big help.

"This year we have a strong senior class and look for great leadership," Welty said. "The freshman class coming in has the potential to fill key field event spots. This year's team has speed, leadership and a hard work ethic. We should see big drops in time with our sprinting, hurdling and relay teams."

The Chieftains return three athletes from last year's regional qualifying 4x4 team in Ardner, Clouse and Breidenbach. Ardner also made regionals in the 800, while Bodart advanced in the 110 hurdles.

Welty said she's hoping the team can move up in the final season of the MAL.

"We have the potential to be a very competitive team in the league this year," she said. "Our team goal is to improve on our dual meet record and to continue to win some big invites."
