New Riegel Girls Track

March 28, 2014
The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Alana Stevens.

2013: Eighth in MAL

Returning Letterwinners: Seniors Mikayla Theis (throws); Olivia Borer (hurdles). Sophomores Michala Nartker (throws); Abby Mathias (sprints/mid distance); Desarae Dyer (sprints); Bailey Reinhart (sprints/mid distance; Elizabeth Zoeller (sprints/lj).

Others: Freshman Madeline Nagel (sprints).

Outlook: It's not been the easiest year for preseason practice, but Stevens and her girls have worked through it.

To the New Riegel coach, having a particularly biting late winter/early spring is just part of being in track.

"I think this is the first time I've cancelled practice due to snow," she said. "But we've been getting outside pretty much every day. Even though it's cold, we keep moving. You've got to do what we've got to do. It is what it is. It's track. It's spring."

And Stevens said her group of athletes has responded well so far. It's not a large group, so Stevens said the focus will be on individual athletes and individual events.

"We have a good hard-working group of girls, so we're just gonna focus on those individual events and reaching goals," Stevens said. "We have a couple of individuals who can do very well."

The coach also said she has a strong leader to keep things running smoothly.

"Definitely Olivia Borer, she's taken over the leadership role," she said. "Fourth year in track, senior year, she's ready to go."
