Outlook: Columbian boasts three state qualifiers in its distance corp. Granted, none of those have been in track. But with Brandon Gibson, Lewis (cross country state qualifiers) and Gates (state swimming qualifier) it wouldn't be a surprise if any of them makes another trip.

Gibson and Lewis took sixth at regionals last year in the 1,600 and 3,200 respectively. But, Focht said her veterans will be helped out by the depth of the group.

"Our distance will be very strong for us, and even stronger because we have some depth," she said. "We have 9-12 runners and that brings some added depth that we didn't have last year. Those guys had to pull a lot of weight."

But that's far from the only area in which Focht feels her team will be able to rack up some points.

"I think we're going to be very good in throws; I think we're really going to be really good in relays and middle distance," she said. "Our 4x4, I have two kids I have to fill in there, but I feel we'll be strong again. Our sprinters will be much stronger. They are much more mature, and are working hard in weight room."

Focht pointed out to Hunt as one to watch in the 800 and Miller as one of the top sprinters. Walker will be a top sprinter and jumper for the Tornadoes.

Columbian sent its 4x400 team to regionals last year but lost the majority of the runners. However, Focht thinks filling the team back up won't be a problem.

"I see our guys reloading that team," she said. "I think we'll be stronger in longer sprints than shorter sprints. We'll be looking that way for other regional qualifiers too I think."

Thirteen seniors suit up for the Tornadoes and Focht said there are members of the group who have clearly stepped up in a leadership role.

"Donovan and Codey are senior captains. They are definitely leading the way with their work ethic," Focht said. "They both love track so I think that enthusiasm shows in what they do."
