March 28, 2014
The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Alex Lucius, first year.

Returning letterwinners: Juniors Jack Burtis; Danny George. Sophomore Phillip Boes.

Others: Seniors Miranda Shorts; Amanda Traxler; Amanda Martorana. Freshmen Ryan Gase; Nick Martorana.

Outlook: Just because Calvert has a new leader and a lot of fresh faces, don't expect the Senecas to supine.

Lucius already has achieved his initial goal since getting the job.

"The first goal was to get numbers enough to have a team," Lucius said.

The Senecas return Burtis, George and Boes to the lineup this year.

"Burtis is our strongest player coming back," Lucius said of his No. 1 singles player. "We're going to look to him as a leader and rely on him throughout the season."

At No. 2 singles will be Boes.

"Again, there we should be pretty solid," Lucius said. "We should be able to rely on him for some leadership as well as a few wins here and there."

Newcomer Gase will handle duties at No. 3. singles.

The other returnee, George, will team with Nick Martorana at No. 1 doubles.

"George is very aggressive, very physical," Lucius said. "Nick is a newcomer. He's a hard worker. Hopefully he can grow over the season."

Lucius knows his team will have its share of challenges.

"Overall we have some experience coming back with three guys," Lucius said. "Numbers-wise, we're obviously limited. Hopefully we can secure a few things and a few wins."

With no league to play in, the coach said the focus remain simple.

"As far as goals go, we want to maintain a consistent lineup and be competitive," Lucius said.

"We want to get better every week, hope the kids enjoy it and have fun."
