FOSTORIA A fire reported Thursday night at an East Center Street house caused heavy smoke damage throughout the residence.
Lt. Jason Root of Fostoria Fire Division said firefighters were called to 317 E. Center St. at 11:09 p.m. after a caller reported a fire in the basement of the two-story house.
According to Fostoria Police reports, the caller had reported an electrical fire started in the basement, but it was out. The caller then called back police minutes later to report the fire had started again.
Root said after firefighters' arrival at the residence, the fire was under control within 15 minutes. He said there was limited structural damage to the basement and kitchen area, but there was moderate to heavy smoke damage reported through the residence.
Root said the damage is repairable and estimated to be around $30,000.
Root said the Red Cross was contacted to assist the family, who was displaced because the utilities were damaged from the fire.
He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
