Seneca County Board of Commissioners approved a funding request for computer upgrades for the Seneca County Sheriff's Department during a meeting Tuesday.
Sheriff Bill Eckelberry said Microsoft was ending support of Windows XP April 8 and the computers would need to be upgraded to make sure the system is protected from viruses.
Eleven computers are not upgradeable and would need to be replaced, while 13 could be upgraded to Windows 7, he said.
Since the new equipment and upgrades were not factored into the budget, Eckelberry said commissioners would have to appropriate additional funding.
The board approved a resolution appropriating $12,920.53 to allow for the purchase of the computers and upgrades to Windows 7.
Commissioner Fred Zoeller said the board is to receive estimates regarding maintenance to the outside of the sheriff's department and jail, which might include the assistance of the inmates to defray costs.
Board President Holly Stacy said a grant to fund ATV trails in Seneca County might be available from the Erie Basin Resource Conservation and Development Council.
Zoeller said the county has been guiding the committee looking into the project, and has involved the Seneca County Park District and the Seneca Regional Planning Commission.
More research is being sought and Zoeller said the committee also is checking liability issues.
Stacy also updated the board about the Jobs Fair to be held 3-6:30 p.m. May 12 at Tiffin University's Heminger Center. More than 50 businesses and 500 people participated in the fair last year.
Businesses that would like to participate in this year's Jobs Fair can sign up through Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp.'s website at senecasuccess.word
press.com. Individuals are encouraged to register in advance but also may walk in.
The board also opened bids for a passenger van for the Seneca County Opportunity Center. Bids were received from Rush Truck Center in Akron and Bus Service Inc. in Canal Winchester. The bids are to be reviewed by the Seneca County Opportunity Center before a decision is to be made.
In other business, the board approved:
An appropriation adjustment of $25,000 within the Maintenance and Repair Fund.
A supplemental appropriation of $1,870 for the Law Library Resources Board Fund.
