WESTERVILLE - Heidelberg was uncertain of the future when making the trip to Otterbein as the Student Princes were vying for a place in the Ohio?Athletic Conference tournament.
The Student Princes needed a Muskingum loss to Baldwin Wallace and a win against Otterbein to cement their tournament spot. With the upending win by Muskingum, Heidelberg was playing for pride at that point.
Unfortunately the clock struck midnight on that Cinderella story at 5 p.m. Saturday evening when Muskingum upset Baldwin Wallace, 70-63.
Despite knowing a trip to the postseason wasn't in the cards, Heidelberg came out with an effort worthy of March Madness.
By the time Heidelberg left town, the home-standing Cardinals were left feeling a bit Blue. Jackson Blue's putback basket closed out a Heidelberg rally in an 84-82 overtime win.
Heidelberg trailed 37-32 at the half.
It was at the 17:40 mark that 'Berg took back the reigns after a Doug Waldmannstetter layup knotted the game, 41-41.
With 30 seconds left in regulation, Heidelberg was closing in on the victory after Deonte Holder's layup put them up 73-71. But, the Cardinals weren't finished as Jason Davis made a layup to send the game to overtime.
The game saw 16 lead chances in all.
Otterbein kept nipping at the heels of Heidelberg, whose largest lead was only three points through out the entire game.
Heidelberg's Keith Mackie missed a jump shot that kicked back to Blue with a second left. Blue's last-ditch effort secured the victory and had the Student Princes leaving Westerville with their heads held high.
Holder and Mackie led the Student Princes with 18 points. Doug Waldmannstetter was right behind with 14 points, while Jackson Blue led the team in rebounds with eight and had 12 points.
