Construction is under way for Tiffin University's new addition, Murphy Academic Support Center. Ground for the center was broken in November. The Adena Corp. from Mansfield is the construction company for the project.
"Construction is progressing on schedule and is projected to be completed by July 2014," TU President Paul Marion said. "Construction of the Murphy Center was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Frank Murphy, who is a member of the TU Board of Trustees."
The two-floor, 5,000-square-foot support center is to be built as an addition to Pfeiffer Library. The library was constructed in 1967 and dedicated in 1977 in memory of former TU President Richard Pfeiffer. Head Librarian Fran Fleet was hired in 1983 when the library had only one office, five rows of shelves that held about 10,000 volumes, and tables and chairs for students.

The new facility is to provide offices for tutors and success coaches to meet individually with students; a conference room for group study sessions and group tutorials; a classroom for classes, seminars and workshops; an open area with computers for student use; and offices for the director of Student Success Services, director of career development and director of internships.
"The purpose is to help students succeed by providing adequate space in a centralized location for these academic support programs and services," Marion said. "Currently, there is not adequate space for this purpose."
The interior layout was developed based on suggestions by the staff members who will use the facility to assist students. The exterior design was prepared to blend in with the existing campus buildings, especially Seitz Hall, which is immediately across Miami Street.
Students now use the Student Success Center in Friedley Hall for tutoring and study skills assistance.
As the dean of academic support programs and chief retention officer at TU, Annette Staunton oversees the director of Student Success Services, director of disability services, success coaches, Office of Academic Advising and Office of Registration and Records.
"The Murphy Academic Support Center is to definitely benefit the students of Tiffin University," Staunton said. "The center is to become a learning and resource facility where students have access to academic programs and the resources they need to be successful."
The other major project under way at Tiffin University is the renovation of the two-story office building on Miami Street that was acquired by TU from Pettibone Co., Marion said.
"This facility will house the faculty members of the School of Graduate and Distance Education and the staff members of the Division of Distance Education and of the Department of Graduate and Distance Education Student Services."
Ownership of the property took place Sept. 30, 2012. The property is to be gutted, and new paint and flooring along with air conditioning and heat will be implemented.
