My mother was raised as a good, God-fearing Methodist. Among her beliefs was a strong aversion to lies. This even applied to golf and bridge playing.
I believe she would have been disgusted with the lies, falsehoods and tricks used by our political leaders in passing and propping up Obamacare. Why? As a poet once said: "Let me count the ways."
1. "If you like your present (medical) insurance, you can keep it. Period!"
2. "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Period!"
These statements were publicly voiced repeatedly from before the Obamacare vote on Christmas Eve 2010 until after Obama's re-election in 2012. Yet, after the election, his administration issued regulations mandating that all health policies include birth control, maternity and mental health coverage. These new regulations effectively disqualified almost all individual private health insurance plans. Woops!
Those people who had Obamacare forced upon them often had to get the lowest-bidder coverage from the government health plan, which disqualified them from continuing to see their local doctor and from being treated in their local hospital, as well as in all top-line teaching hospitals such as Cleveland Clinic. And yet, credible evidence has been revealed that the Obama administration knew this would be the result since mid-2010, and that the White House's plan all along was to deceive the voters in order to get re-elected and to force through Obamacare.
As many as 8 million people have been forced off their individual plans and as many as 80 million will be forced off of their employer-provided group plans next year when the employer mandate is reinstated.
3. "You will save $2,500 per year under Obamacare!"
Many of those whose individual health care plans were canceled were forced on to Obamacare plans that increase their insurance costs and deductibles, with premiums up to two and three times those of their private policies, especially because of mandatory increases in unwanted coverage. Should a 60-year old nun, or a priest, be forced to pay for maternity coverage? Likewise, multiple hidden tax increases on investment income have been enacted, as well as tax increases created by stipulation that a greater percentage of your medical expenses will now not be deductible from your income taxes.
4. "All people will be treated the same; especially Congress and its staff!" (It's the law!)
But the president waived the law as it applies to Congress and its staff.
5. "The law will apply across the board to all, effective Jan. 1, 2014." (It's the law!)
The president waived the law as it applies to most large corporations, big labor unions and certain politically preferred groups. But no waiver of Congress or any other group is authorized in the statute.
One of my favorite movie quotes is from "Three Days of the Condor," in which Robert Redford says to a government operative: "What is the matter with you people? You think that not being caught in a lie is the same as telling the truth!"
Very truly yours,
Michael B. Lange,
