LIMA - Carey's Zack Sauber claimed fifth at 220 pounds and 145-pound teammate Zach Brodman came in sixth to top local efforts Saturday at the perennially tough Lima Central Catholic Thunderbird Invitational.
Sauber beat Woodmore's Henry Flores in the match for fifth, while Brodman lost due to a default to Coldwater's Reece Kaiser.
The two places helped the Blue Devils end 18th with 57 points in the 40-team field.
Calvert took 35th (7) and Lakota tied for 38th (0).
John Brodman finished one match away from placing for Calvert among the 120 pounders, going 3-2 and suffering his final loss in the consolation quarterfinals. His losses were to eventual champion Tyler Sarreshteh of Liberty-Benton, a state-placer in 2013, and Archbold's Zach Meyer, who ended fourth.
"Lost to a couple quality kids," Calvert coach Travis Salyer said. "Kind of tuned us up for the postseason."
Phillip Boes (145) and Noah Francis (220) each went 0-2 for Calvert.
McDermitt gives 'Berg a championship
ALMA, Mich. - Colin McDermitt captured a title and and 13 of his teammates finished in the top six Saturday for Heidelberg at the Alma Open.
McDermitt's crown came at 133 pounds when he pinned Indiana Tech's Brett Yarbrough in 6:21.
Justin Kihn added a fifth at 133 for the Student Princes by flattening Alma's Daniel Martinez (1:31).
Two other weight classes featured a pair of Heidelberg placers.
Aaron Bank finished fourth at 157 pounds after falling 5-3 to Indiana Tech's Chase Hack, and Alex Vencill claimed fifth for the Student Princes with a forfeit.
At 285 pounds, Nino Majoy finished fourth for Heidelberg after a 3-1 loss to Ohio Northern's Cody Lovejoy, and Central Michigan's Jimmy Szep beat Heidelberg's Alex Farrow 7-3 for fifth.
Tyler Majoy added a second for the Student Princes at 141 pounds, losing by pin to Central Michigan's Adam Nichols (2:15).
Damon Cheek captured third for Heidelberg with a 3-2 tiebreaker win over Alma 149-pounder Cody Sullivan.
Fourths came from Ty Price and Myles Wright. Central Michigan 125-pounder Kody Azarian beat Price 18-3, and Ohio Northern 165-pounder Colt Lovejoy pinned Wright (4:05).
Heidelberg also got sixths from Matt Shurina, Richard Dowdley and Gage Finegan. Indiana Tech 174-pounder Tyler Goldman pinned Shurina (2:16), Alma 184-pounder Durham Basso got the win over Dowdley via forfeit, and Ohio Northern 197-pounder Kody Bellamy pinned Finegan (5:24).
TU track gets records, provisional efforts
YOUNGSTOWN - Deborah Broderson and Morgan Horn set school records as the Tiffin University men's and women's track teams competed Friday at the Youngstown State University Invitational.
TU had 27 top-10 finishes, seven NCAA Division II provisional marks and five additions to the top 10 list.
For the women, Broderson cleared 5-8 to win the high jump and hit the provisional mark. She also tied the school record set in 2012 by Lynzi Daughenbaugh.
Horn cleared 10-8 in the pole vault to break the record she shared with Veronica Azzalina. Horn ended tied for eighth.
Sarah Clow claimed third in the shot put with a provisional toss of 47-8, the third-longest throw in TU history.
Ashley DeWittwas added a third in the 20-pound weight toss with a throw of 60-7 1/4.
For the men, Stephon Goodwin (6.93) and Emmanuel Grembo (6.95) ran 1-2 in the 60-meter dash for the Dragons.
Dominic Colvin was runner-up in the 200 with a provisional mark of 22.21 seconds. Lamar Hargrove took third in the 400 with a provisional time of 48.54 seconds, third best in school history.
